Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes Series
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes is a lecture series that is primarily orthopedically based. It consists of eight, informative, and even fun (yes, fun) functional exercise workshops focused on reducing stress and providing natural support for every part of the body, especially areas vulnerable to pain and injury over time. It inclues some exercise and group participation. All exercises are easily modified to be safe regardless of age or fitness level. Much of the focus is on developing skills and sharing tips in performing activities of daily living safely and constructively. Classes include information, demonstration and participation!
The topics include:
1. Defy Gravity! Staying Upright Under Pressure - Learn tools and tips to establish and maintain good alignment. Merely exercising can have limited value and be even injurious if you're not holding yourself in good position. Includes work on balance and reducing risk of falling.
2. Wearing an Internal Girdle: Core Strengthening for the Older Adult - Developing a strong torso becomes more important as you get older. Learn easy ways to establish a strong core to protect the spine and reduce risk of back pain and injury especially suited to older adults.
3. Repair Wear & Tear: Exercise Anti-inflammtories - Easy, practical and surprising ways to treat injury and chronic pain, and reduce the risk of future pain. No nasty side effects and easy on the stomach lining! Also learn how to safely return to exercise after an illness or convalescent period.
4. Atlas Shrugged: The Weight of the World on the Shoulders Learn how you can ease the chronic burden from the neck and shoulders. Practical information, daily tips and exercises to reduce pain, maintain stability and range of motion of the shoulders.
5. Back to Backs: More Focus on the Spine - Everything attaches to it - head, arms and legs - and depends on it to stay upright. Practical information, daily tips and exercises to reduce pain, risk of injury, and maintain stability of the back. Will included demonstartion and practice in healthy bending, lifting, and carrying.
6. Not Too Old to Be Hip! Help for Hips - Far more than just a ball and socket: tight, weak hips can lead to back pain, lack of mobility, and increased risk of falls. Practical information, daily tips and exercises to reduce pain, risk of injury, and maintain stability of the hip area.
7. Stress Management for the Knees - The most important hinge of your body has a relentless job getting you through the day, up and down stairs, out of chairs, and off the floor if necessary. Practical information, daily tips and exercises to reduce pain, risk of injury, and maintain stability of the knees.
8. De Agony of De-Feet - Do you ever stop to think about the humble but vital job of the lowly foot? Don't ignore this most relied on and under-rated body part. Practical information, daily tips and exercises to reduce pain, risk of injury, and maintain stability of ankles and feet. Discussion will also include information on finding the right shoes for you.
